Vietnam’s Capital Unveils Indochina’s Premier Biology Museum

The Hanoi University of Science’s Museum of Biology, located on the second floor of the historic Indochina University (now the University of Natural Sciences) at 19 Le Thanh Tong Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, has been a cornerstone of the city’s scientific community since its establishment in 1926.

As the first museum of its kind in Indochina, it served research and educational purposes, housing an extensive collection of animal and plant specimens from across the region. During the Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2024, the museum opened its doors to the public for the very first time, offering a unique opportunity to explore its fascinating exhibits.

Housed within a stunning example of French colonial architecture, the museum stands as a testament to Hanoi’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Nearly a century later, the institution still boasts an impressive collection, meticulously preserving hundreds of thousands of specimens from Vietnam, some dating back to the late 19th century.
Greeting visitors at the entrance is the skeleton of a large mammoth, setting the tone for the fascinating journey through Vietnam’s natural history that awaits.

The museum is home to an extensive collection of mammal specimens, representing a significant portion of Vietnam’s diverse mammalian fauna. With 2,500 specimens across 136 species and subspecies, it offers a comprehensive glimpse into the country’s rich biodiversity.

The exhibition showcases 136 out of 300 mammal species found in Vietnam, covering 45% of the country’s mammalian diversity, a testament to the museum’s comprehensive approach to conservation and research.

Among the highlights of the collection are various feline specimens, including the majestic Indochinese tiger, the elusive jungle cat, and the graceful leopard, to name a few.

The museum’s collection extends beyond mammals, offering a comprehensive overview of Vietnam’s biodiversity. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars, particularly in the fields of systematics, taxonomy, and biodiversity studies.

Once a “natural laboratory,” the Biology Museum was exclusively dedicated to teaching and training future generations of scientists and conservationists. Its impact on scientific research and education in Hanoi cannot be overstated.

During the nine-day festival, the museum buzzed with excitement as curious visitors, especially the youth of Hanoi, explored its halls and discovered the wonders of nature.

Among the exhibits that captivated visitors was a collection of bird specimens, featuring the majestic Emperor Penguin, a species that has captured the imagination of people worldwide.

The museum has also attracted international visitors, providing them with a unique window into the incredible biodiversity of Indochina.
