Image
Composer Duc Huy, 77, is renowned as a music legend in the realm of love songs. He is planning an upcoming live concert in Hanoi, the city where he spent the first six years of his life and where his love for music has thrived throughout his entire career. ‘Hanoi is a Vietnam with four seasons’ Why did you decide to organize a second live show after your first one in 2007? After the “And the Heart is Happy Again” show in Ho Chi Minh City, I didn’t anticipate organizing another concert. However, last year when I returned to Hanoi, I had a conversation with producer Thu Ha from Ngoc Viet Company. Ha expressed interest in organizing a live show, and if circumstances allowed, I decided to give it a go. As fate would have it, everything fell into place naturally. When things flow naturally, there’s no need for excessive contemplation. Being able to overcome Covid-19 and continue living a healthy life here fills me with a sense of gratitude. Sometimes, apart from physical ailments, stres...

Vietnam discovers 2,000-year-old stringed instrument

Image
Discovered along the Mekong River in southern Vietnam, the 2,000-year-old instrument resembles a single-stringed harp and may have been an ancestor to the complex musical instruments people still plucked today in Vietnam, according to UK-based science website IFLScience . The artifact consists of a 35-centimeter piece of deer antler with a hole at one end for a peg, which was likely used to tune the string. The antler most likely came from a Sambar deer or an Indian hog deer, two species native to mainland Southeast Asia. While the string seems to have eroded away long ago, the instrument features a bridge that was perhaps used to support the string. Lead researcher and Ph.D. student Fredeliza Campos from the Australian National University said the artifact is at least 2,000 years old — dating back to Vietnam’s pre-Oc Eo culture along the Mekong River, which is exceptionally early for this kind of instrument. Dong Ho paintings with traditional subjects vividly reflect the ancient agricultural society, along with the life and practices of rural Vietnamese people.  The Dong Ho ballet will combine the folk-themed paintings with the melodious sound of the concerto Four Seasons of Vivaldi rearranged by Max Richter. “The ballet is one of the main repertoires this year at VNOB,” said the theatre’s director and the ballet’s art director Phan Manh Duc. “It will vitalise Dong Ho paintings through the performing of ballet dancers on their pointe shoes. We invited London-based choreographer Ngoc Anh for this project aiming at making a unique ballet to combine Vietnamese folk and western classical art genres.” Dong Ho gives choreographer Anh a chance to express his feelings about the art and culture of Dong Ho folk paintings. He ...
