The Toxic Legacy: French Court Dismisses Appeal in Agent Orange Case

Image
In a courageous legal battle, Tran To Nga, a former reporter from what was once French Indochina, took on 14 agrochemical companies, accusing them of causing severe harm to herself and others by selling Agent Orange to the American military. The herbicide was infamously used during the Vietnam War with devastating consequences. Nga’s initial case, filed in 2021, was dismissed by a French court, ruling that the companies enjoyed legal immunity as they worked for a sovereign government. The Paris Court of Appeal upheld this decision, citing the companies’ immunity status as a barrier to Nga’s demands. Undeterred, the 82-year-old veteran journalist, who has lived in France for 30 years, plans to take her fight to France’s highest appeals court. Her health issues, including Type 2 diabetes and a rare insulin allergy, as well as the loss of her daughter to a heart malformation, are all attributed by Nga to her exposure to Agent Orange. The use of Agent Orange in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambod...

Indonesia and Myanmar are hot on their heels, tied for second place with four points each, setting up an exciting conclusion to the group stage. The Philippines, sitting in fourth place with three points, are still in contention, while Laos have been eliminated. It was a dramatic game that saw Vietnam equalize in the dying moments. Things Canadian Travelers Must Know Before Planning a Trip to Vietnam

While Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the largest cities in Vietnam, the central region offers unique experiences that cannot be found elsewhere. Digital nomads from Vancouver often visit Da Nang, located in central Vietnam, during the winter season. This is not surprising given the city’s attractions and amenities. Many travelers prefer to visit Vietnam between March and April, as the rainfall is less frequent and the temperatures are milder during this time of the year. Vietnam has a number of popular sightseeing spots that should not be missed. In Hanoi, visitors can immerse themselves in the city’s rich art scene, explore historic temples, and indulge in local street food. The city also offers a mix of experiences, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the culture or enjoy a relaxing drink at a rooftop bar or a laid-back backpacker bar. Ha Long Bay is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Vietnam. The bay features over 1,500 islands and islets, with towering limesto...

Hills stretch to the horizon while local farmers are in the fields. Dak Pao is home to Ca Dong ethnic people. Hang said that several years ago, it was common to see drunken men lying next to their motorbikes on the streets in Dak Pao.  “Ca Dong people often drink, but in Dak Pao, they drink too much. They drink until they get drunk and fall. “Their health may not be good enough to work with the drinking habit. The number of alcoholic men was higher than the number of working men,” said Hang. Of course, the poverty in the village was the result of drinking. Figures showed this fact. The village had 50 households but half of them were poor. Every home had alcoholics. In some families, ...
