Romanian Vietnamese Community Strives to Maintain Their Native Language

The Vietnamese Embassy in Romania and the Vietnamese Association in Romania recently held a ceremony to honor the Vietnamese language. The event aimed to follow the teachings of Uncle Ho, emphasizing the importance of the Vietnamese language as an extremely invaluable asset of the nation, now being spread more widely.

Ambassador Do Duc Thanh, speaking at the ceremony, expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the Vietnamese community in Romania. He praised the dedication of the teachers and recognized the contributions of several individuals.

According to Ambassador Do Duc Thanh, the tradition of honoring the Vietnamese language among the community in Romania was maintained and developed throughout the previous year. Vietnamese language classes were held every summer, and the quality of courses was improved. Various cultural activities, such as Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations and major national holidays, continued to contribute to the preservation and recognition of the Vietnamese language among Vietnamese people living abroad.

The community actively participates in activities organized by the State Committee on Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (SCOVA) to honor the Vietnamese language. Five Vietnamese Youth Ambassadors in Romania were selected from the group of youth returning to participate in the 2023 Vietnam Summer Camp.

The embassy will continue to support the community in the Vietnamese language teaching and learning movement. This includes ordering book publications and children’s stories as reference materials for students in Vietnamese language classes. The aim is to ensure that activities honoring the Vietnamese language can be regularly maintained.

During the ceremony, students of Vietnamese classes and teenagers participating in the 2023 Vietnam Summer Camp shared their love and appreciation for the Vietnamese language and their homeland.

The event concluded with a special cultural program featuring poems, songs, and Vietnamese dance performances by the children.

Since 2011, the Vietnamese Association in Romania and the Vietnamese Women’s Club in Romania have organized Vietnamese language classes for children and teenagers every summer. These classes have attracted approximately 40 students. The teachers are enthusiastic volunteers within the community, who aim to maintain the Vietnamese language in Romania for Vietnamese children born and raised there.

In August 2022, the Prime Minister approved a project to establish a Vietnamese language day. September 8 was chosen as the day to honor the Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community. 2023 is the first year in which this project has been implemented, and it has already shown positive results due to the support and response from various organizations, including Vietnamese associations and individuals abroad.
